England star batter Joe Root expressed uncertainty about how many more Test runs he needs to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record. Despite the growing calls for him to achieve this feat, Root remains focused on his current form and performance.
In the recently concluded Test match against Pakistan in Multan, Root played a spectacular knock of 262 to help England finish at a total of 823/7 before declaring. With this knock, he also reached a massive milestone by surpassing Alastair Cook’s total of 12,472 Test runs and becoming England’s highest run-scorer in red-ball cricket.
This knock again solidified his position as one of if not the best batter of his generation. With 12,664 runs from 147 Tests at an impressive average of 51.47, Root is now only 624 runs away from former India head coach Rahul Dravid’s tally of 13,288 runs.
However, Tendulkar’s record of 15,921 Test runs is still quite far away and Root will need to continue this red-hot form if he wants to break the coveted record.
“I’ve no idea. It’s some way off yet,” Root told Sky Sports when asked about whether he would go on to break Tendulkar’s record.
Root, who had experienced a year-long drought without scoring a Test century prior to January 2021, proved his batting prowess and made a stunning comeback to regain his form and since then hasn’t looked back.
“In Covid, I spent that period off looking at my game, the areas where I felt there were little holes and weaknesses in it and just really trying to have a really good understanding of my strengths and weaknesses,” Root said.
“And then work with the strengths and try to tighten up the areas within my game that needed to just probably raise the level,” Root added.
The second Test of the 3-match series between Pakistan and England will commence from October 15 and will again be played in Multan.
