The Lagos State Health District III on Thursday, joined the global community in celebrating World Sight Day, themed “Love Your Eyes,” an annual observance aimed at raising awareness about blindness, vision impairment, and the importance of eye health.
As part of the celebration, free eye screenings were conducted for pupils at St. Michael Primary School and Odunmola Junior and Secondary School, both located in Epe Local Government Area.
Speaking on the initiative, the District’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke emphasised the importance of early diagnosis in preventing long-term vision problems.
She noted that the provision of free prescription eyeglasses to students in need highlights the critical role early intervention plays in promoting better eye health and ensuring that children can reach their full potential in education.
Dr. Adeleke said, “By addressing eye health at a young age, this initiative aligns with global efforts to reduce preventable blindness and vision impairment. It reflects our commitment to ensuring equitable access to essential healthcare services for all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background.”
She further noted that the Lagos State Government is dedicated to improving public health services, particularly for young people, as part of its broader mission to foster a healthier, more educated population. Saying, “By providing these vital services, we are giving children the tools they need to succeed both academically and in their future careers.”
Dr. Adeleke also underscored the importance of regular eye check-ups, urging residents to take proactive steps in maintaining their eye health. She reiterated the government’s commitment to making healthcare more accessible and inclusive for all.
This year’s World Sight Day celebration underscores the state’s ongoing efforts to promote preventive care and early intervention as key components in building a healthier, more empowered society.
