Plymouth Argyle manager and Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney, thinks Ange Postecoglou must adapt his style at Tottenham while likening his stubbornness to Bayern Munich boss, Vincent Kompany.
Ange Postecoglou is ten games into his second season as Tottenham manager, with the former Celtic boss reminding the public after his side’s loss to Arsenal that he ‘always’ wins something in his second year in charge of a club. (BBC Sport)
It appeared as though the Australian had started to get his side to click after a sluggish start to the season but five straight victories were followed by an infuriating 3-2 loss away to Brighton. People are once again questioning the Spurs manager.
Despite a recent run of form, Tottenham currently sit ninth in the Premier League table after seven games, one of Spurs’ poorest starts in recent years.
Plymouth Argyle manager, Wayne Rooney, has likened Postecoglou’s attacking philosophy to Vincent Kompany, suggesting that the 59-year-old may need to switch style to earn results.
He stated on The Overlap: “You maybe try to hold onto that a little bit. In the second half of games, they have folded a little bit, just stick in there.
“The way he [Postecoglou] is, Vincent Kompany was the same. He wants to play in a certain way and then you’re not picking up results.
“But I think Ange as well, sometimes, they are winning 2-0, just come in a little bit, try to be harder to score against, to be harder to give chances up and they maybe come away and win that game. You have to adapt. You have to change.
“If you are 2-0 down at half-time, you know Brighton are going to come out with something different. They have to! You have to be ready for that. You have to adapt. You have to be ready to change and you might go back to a back five towards the end of the game if you are winning.”
Bayern Munich manager, Vincent Kompany, was previously reported to be in talks with Tottenham over their vacant managerial position before the North London outfit eventually appointed Ange Postecoglou back in 2023.
Sacha Tavolieri reported in April of 2023 that Spurs made contact with Kompany’s agents about hiring the ex-Manchester City defender as their new manager following the Belgian’s impressive Championship title victory with Burnley.
Kompany’s switch to Tottenham never came to fruition, with Postecoglou undertaking the role instead, leaving Kompany to finish 19th with Burnley before joining German giants, Bayern Munich.
