(NEXSTAR) – Perhaps the most frightening aspect of Google’s Frightgeist website is that it already knows what you’re thinking of wearing on Halloween.
Google's latest Frightgeist guide for 2024, which is currently live, features insight into the top-trending costumes ideas of the year, as well as the top-trending costume ideas for metro areas across the entire country. (It should be noted, though, that "top-trending" means these costume ideas experienced the biggest increase in search interest year-over-year, and not that they were the top-searched costume ideas overall.)
The search interest in specific costumes appeared to vary widely from region to region too, with ideas like “Taylor Swift” and “Chappell Roan” trending in Montana, and “Bluey” and “Hello Kitty” trending in Minnesota. But common themes across most regions included Disney characters, horror movie villains, Marvel heroes and more traditional monsters.
In Acadiana, the top trending costume is Lorax, according to Google. The Dr. Seuss character first appeared in print in 1971, but rose to bigger fame after the 2012 movie of the same name.
Ghostbusters (any of them), Michael Myers (presumably the horror movie character and not the Canadian comic actor of "Shrek" and Austin Powers" fame), Breaking Bad's Walter White and Marilyn Monroe round out the top five.
Nationwide, the top-trending costumes for 2024 include characters from film, TV, video games and even the 2024 Paris Olympics. But the top-trending costume, which is currently enjoying the biggest leap in interest over last year, is “Shrunken Head Bob,” a character from the “Beetlejuice” franchise.
"’Beetlejuice shrunken head’ is the top searched shrunken head of all time,” Google’s Frightgeist analysts added.
The top ten trending costume ideas, according to Frightgeist, are below.
Google also collected data on the top-trending Kid Costumes, Dog Costumes and Duo Costumes, with "Red" (“Descendants: Rise of Red), "Dogpool" (an alternate-universe version of Deadpool) and "Deadpool and Wolverine" topping the lists, respectively.
Additional information on the top-trending ideas for party decor, makeup and lawn decorations can be found in the Frightgeist guide.
Google began collecting data for its 2024 Frightgeist guide in September 2023. The results of its lists, based on year-over-year interest, “aim to give a unique look into how people are preparing for the Halloween season,” according to Google.
