MSNBC host Chris Hayes details why he thinks a 'slow motion insurrection' is underway

A Donald Trump-led insurrection is happening again – and this time it’s “in plain sight.” That’s the stark warning MSNBC host Chris Hayes gave viewers as he kicked off his Friday night show.

In a monologue highlighting what he believes is an effort already in motion by former president Donald Trump and his allies to undermine the 2024 election, Hayes told viewers of his show, “All In,” the former president “is very clearly planning to run the same playbook from last time."

“We are watching a slow-motion insurrection,” Hayes said. “In these final weeks of the campaign, Trump and his allies are laying all the groundwork, getting ready to reject the free and fair result of this election if he does not win, that’s plain as day – we all know it.”

He went on to play a clip of Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) refusing to acknowledge in a New York Times interview that Trump lost the 2020 election.

He continued: “Today J.D. Vance said he would help his running mate in another coup attempt after refusing to acknowledge that Trump lost in 2020, over and over again,” Hayes said, adding that to some degree, “the 2020 lie is about protecting Donald Trump's fragile ego.”

“But also, more seriously, we have to take J.D. Vance and Donald Trump seriously. Every day they are telling us how they are approaching this. They are openly plotting to steal this election because while we may be used to the lies and anti-democratic rhetoric, we are headed to a very dangerous and precarious moment,” Hayes told viewers.

Hayes' guest, University of Southern California professor Franita Tolson, told the host that the idea of fraud in the U.S. election system has “been building before Trump and will exist after Trump” even if Vice President Kamala Harris wins the presidency, she added.

“And it will be used to further more voting restrictions even if we get past this election cycle,” she said. Tolson later noted that “the guardrails of our democracy barely held in 2020.”
