On Wednesday night, Hurricane Milton made landfall on Siesta Key near Florida’s west coast, causing deadly tornadoes and leaving over 3 million people without power. The damage comes less than a month after Hurricane Helene blew through the state’s Gulf Coast and into North Carolina, killing upward of 230 people in six Southeast states. As recovery efforts get underway, many people throughout the country are chipping in — including Taylor Swift, who made a $5 million donation to Feeding America.
The organization, a nonprofit that runs food banks throughout the U.S., released a statement from its CEO, Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, thanking Swift for her donation. “This contribution will help communities rebuild and recover, providing essential food, clean water, and supplies to people affected by these devastating storms,” Babineaux-Fontenot wrote. “Thank you, Taylor, for standing with us in the movement to end hunger and for helping communities in need.”
In the weeks since Hurricane Helene made landfall, rampant misinformation — including some spread by Donald Trump — has stymied relief efforts. On Wednesday, more than 97,000 homes in Georgia and North Carolina were still without power. So far, Hurricane Milton, which weakened from a Category 5 to a Category 3 storm when it landed and is now moving inland as a Category 1, has caused widespread power outages and ferocious winds. As of Thursday morning, four deaths were confirmed, and experts have warned of flash and river flooding from the tornadoes. Here are more ways to support hurricane relief efforts.
