Also in the buy-2-get-3 list is Witherspoon’s first book club pick 2024: First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston.

“This book tells the story of Evie Porter, who seems to have everything a girl could want in life,” Witherspoon detailed in her announcement. “She has a perfect, doting boyfriend, she has a house with a picket fence and a fancy group of friends.”

But, despite appearances, Evie is living a “total double life.” “She uses an alias and her job is to infiltrate people’s lives and execute takedowns whenever her boss, the mysterious Mr. Smith, says to,” Witherspoon explained. “She has to stay one step ahead of her past to make sure she will have a future in front of her.” Another page-turner indeed!

“[Strout’s] delivered another heartfelt and beautiful story, returning to the fictional town of Crosby, Maine, to delve into the interconnected lives and loves of all the residences there,” Winfrey said in her announcement. While the book can be read as a standalone novel, many of Strout’s characters from her previous novels, including Winfrey’s other recommendation Olive, Again, reappear in this story. 

“Tell Me Everything has all the things, romance, mystery, secrets and even a possible murder experienced through the unrecorded lives of just ordinary folks,” Winfrey said of her pick.

Also on the list is Winfrey’s October 2022 pick, Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. The official synopsis reads, “Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, this is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival.”

“I so admire the way Barbara has taken the plight of a young boy and invited us on his journey through loss, the foster system, addiction, and so much more,” Winfrey said of the book at the time. “The novel speaks to so many of our country’s relevant issues, but most importantly, it’s absolutely riveting.”
