OSU Farmhouse members to help Hurricane Helene victims
STILLWATER, Okla. (KFOR) - As Hurricane Milton upgrades to a category 5 hurricane, those hit by Hurricane Helene are still cleaning up.
An Oklahoma State fraternity is raising money before hitting the road to help small towns.
"I was like, 'We could do this.' I didn't know how big we would get," said Corbin Lacy.
Lacy and his Farm House Fraternity Brothers are on a mission, to help Hurricane Helene victims.
Helene is the deadliest hurricane to hit the mainland US since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Over the weekend, the death toll inched up to nearly 230.
In Oklahoma last week, Corbin, a junior in college, said he was getting his haircut by his friend, Mika Webb and they discussed the destruction.
Lacy has the tools and know-how from owning a lawn business.
"I kind of know about taking trees down, different things like that, know how to just work on my hands," said Lacy.
He also has man power all under one roof.
After talking about the idea with his fraternity, a dozen of them hopped on board.
They set up a drop-off location at Farm House as well as at Blush Beauty Salon in Stillwater. Lacy said they're taking donations like toiletries, baby care products, protein shakes, and food.
They're accepting monetary donations through their GoFundMe page.
With all the donations they've combined, Lacy has raised around $12,000. They're hoping to buy supplies in bulk along with big-ticket items like generators and batteries.
"We might be to the point where we're going to have to take U-Haul trucks up there just to get everything up there," said Lacy.
The plan is for the Farmhouse brothers to leave Stillwater on Thursday and travel to Butler, Tennessee.
"That's really what we're going to try to strive for on this trip is help the little towns, help the elderly," said Lacy. "Then we're going to help them clear trees out of driveways, knock door to door of people's houses and make sure they're doing okay."
