Ange Postecoglou has taken responsibility for Tottenham’s second-half performance against Brighton and asked people to keep things in context.
Things were looking rosy at Tottenham heading into the game at Brighton. At half-time in Sunday’s game, one could have forgiven some Spurs fans for thinking that their team were on the cusp of something special.
However, the poor second-half performance from the away side served as confirmation that they are still some way off from challenging the best sides in the division.
Postecoglou would have been extremely disappointed by the lacklustre defending he saw from his players but he took full responsibility for the loss.
The Tottenham boss has confessed that his team did not do the basics in the second half at the Amex, remarking that he did not see any fight from his players.
However, the Australian made it clear that the buck stops with him and he has the responsibility to ensure it never happens again. He also asked the media to keep things in context.
When asked if he felt his players got overconfident after a couple of good results, Postecoglou told Football.London: “Look, it’s not a couple of positive results. It was five wins, let’s just keep things in context here. I understand the extremes of what we do. What I’m saying is that we didn’t do the basics of everything we’ve done to get to this point, good, bad or otherwise.
“Even when we didn’t win at Newcastle, we played well and fought hard to the last second to win that game of football. We didn’t do that today and every time we’ve played that’s been an element of our game but I didn’t see that today.
“Why has that happened? The reasons, we can go into a million different aspects and in the cold light of day there may be some logic to it and it may be what you’re saying. Again for me, that’s irrelevant. It’s for me to address and fix and the responsibility falls at my feet and that’s what I need to do.”
We know that the one thing Ange always expects from his players is that they keep going for 90 minutes and never let their intensity drop.
The 59-year-old would have been extremely angered by what he saw from his players in the second half.
Although he has accepted responsibility publicly, there is no doubt that he would have ripped into the squad privately after the full-time whistle.
