Guglielmo Vicario has spoken about the new leadership role handed to him by Ange Postecoglou and on the criticism he has been subject to recently.
While there has been a lot of focus on Vicario’s weaknesses from set-pieces, the Italian continues to make astounding saves for Tottenham on a regular basis.
The 27-year-old certainly appears to have the trust of his teammates and of Postecoglou, with the Tottenham head coach deciding to include him in the club’s leadership group.
The Australian coach explained recently that he decided to include the goalkeeper as he feels Vicario has a lot to add to the squad and sets a great example for the younger players (Football.London).
The Tottenham number confessed that it was a proud moment for him when he joined Heung-min Son, Cristian Romero and James Maddison as part of the club’s leadership group.
He admitted that he is keen to share his experience with the younger players in the squad and help them on their journey.
The former Empoli man told Yahoo Sport: “I am very proud of that (new leadership role). It makes me feel important in the dressing room because we are a group of very young lads, very talented lads.
“But sometimes you need some old guys to manage some situations inside the dressing room, to keep developing these guys and to help them do good things in and out of the pitch. So, very happy with that, but first of all I have to focus on my game and make sure I can perform at the top level.”
Vicario continues to come under criticism from the media, with a microscope now on the way he handles set-pieces and corner kicks. However, the Tottenham man insisted he is not too bothered about what is being said on the outside.
He added: “Criticism is part of football, you know. One day you are top, the other day you are… I can’t say the word! No, it is part of football and what can I do? I can’t handle (control) it, I just have to focus on what I can manage. What I can manage is part of the way of playing football.”
