Ange Postecoglou gave a straightforward response when asked if he is the right man to fix Tottenham’s defensive woes.
Tottenham looked extremely comfortable in the first half against Brighton, having raced to a 2-0 lead and looking well poised to make it six wins from six matches across all competitions.
However, 18 bad minutes is all it took at the start of the second period for the home side to turn the result around, with the Lilywhites struggling to muster any sort of response.
Spurs’ defending for all three goals left a lot to be desired and one could tell from Postecoglou’s body language on the touchline that he was fuming.
While one can argue that the defeat was down to individual errors at the back, Postecoglou refused to single out any of his players for blame, instead taking responsibility for the result.
The Tottenham head coach was also pretty clear that he can do a lot to fix his side’s issues.
When asked if there was anything he could do to fix the kind of mistakes his side made in the second half, Postecoglou told Football.London: “There’s a lot I can do about it. That’s why I’m in the role. If I couldn’t do anything about it I’d get somebody else to sit here.”
Previous Spurs managers have been more than willing to throw players under the bus to absolve themselves of blame after performances such as this.
While Postecoglou would have likely ripped into the players after the full-time whistle, he has accepted blame for the result publicly, which will only increase the respect he has in the dressing room.
