Fabrizio Romano has discussed recent Liverpool transfer rumours involving their apparent interest in talented young Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl.
The 22-year-old has impressed in his time in the Bundesliga and looks like a fine young player who could do well to make the step up to playing for a top Premier League club.
Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column, Romano suggested Liverpool were currently focusing on different areas rather than a midfielder signing like Rohl.
However, he did suggest that Liverpool chief Richard Hughes has a good enough knowledge of the game that someone like Rohl is likely to have come up on his radar at some point, even if there’s nothing particularly concrete to report on this potential deal for the time being.
“I’ve seen the stories about Liverpool’s interest in Freiburg’s Merlin Rohl, but at the moment I don’t have confirmation on Liverpool working on this deal. Liverpool’s focus is currently on different areas, but also for Rohl at the moment there are no concrete contacts ongoing,” Romano said.
“Richard Hughes has fantastic knowledge of talents so I’m sure he’s monitoring many players but that’s it now.”
Liverpool had a surprisingly quiet summer transfer window, though they made an exciting late move for Federico Chiesa, who joined from Juventus, while Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili will be on his way to Anfield next year.
It will be interesting to see who LFC go for next, but it seems Rohl is not necessarily one of the main names for fans of the Merseyside giants to keep an eye on, judging by Romano’s information here.
