Manchester United take on Aston Villa in today’s Premier League clash at Villa Park.
The Red Devils are winless in the last four games in all competitions. Harry Maguire saved their blushes against Porto in the Europa League in midweek with a stoppage time equaliser.
The club face a stern challenge against the Villans this afternoon and it appears a must-win. Erik ten Hag’s job could be on the line and any other result could lead to his dismissal.
United are already six points adrift of the top four and can’t afford to lose further ground today.
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Predicted Line-up:
Andre Onana has been United’s undisputed goalkeeper since his arrival from Inter Milan. He has missed just two games in all competitions. The Cameroonian has been in fine form this term and he is expected to continue between the sticks.
In the back four, we expect one change. Matthijs de Ligt had a tough trip at Porto where he was poor aerially against Samu Omorodion. The Netherlands ace struggled to handle the aerial and physical presence of the striker, who scored a brace.
De Ligt could make way for Harry Maguire. The Englishman could be partnered by Lisandro Martinez, who also needs to step up after an average showing in Portugal. Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot are set to continue from the full-back positions.
Dalot has struggled with his positioning and concentration from left-back this term. We think the Portuguese should return to his preferred right-back role with Mazraoui on the left.
Casemiro and Christian Eriksen should be dropped from the starting XI. Manuel Ugarte is by far the best defensive midfielder in the squad and United will need his legs in the heart of the midfield.
Eriksen has found form lately with three goals and three assists to his name, but the Dane is not the most mobile. United can’t afford the same against a high-pressing Villa outfit on the road.
Kobbie Mainoo faces a late fitness test for an apparent knee issue. It is most likely that the club graduate will start alongside Ugarte in what is a make-or-break game for Ten Hag at United.
Further forward, Amad Diallo should make way for Alejandro Garnacho on the right wing.
Diallo completed 100% of his passes in midweek, but he was ineffective in the final third. He had one attempt on goal with just two touches in the opposite box over 68 minutes.
On the contrary, Garnacho was exceptional in his 45-minute cameo. The Argentine had eight attempts on goal with eight touches in the box. He indirectly contributed to the equaliser.
Marcus Rashford should be a guaranteed starter on the left wing after a goal and an assist on Thursday.
Bruno Fernandes has been in poor form lately. He picked up an unnecessary red card for a high foot against Porto. Ten Hag is still expected to back him from the number 10 role.
Rasmus Hojlund should get the nod up front after scoring in his first start of the season in midweek.
