Peace and Sport Academy – Peace through Sport training sessions in Togo

Last February and March, Peace and Sport carried out two training sessions on the basics of Peace through Sport in Togo, commissioned by the French Embassy as part of its FEF-OSC “Sport and social inclusion in Togo” project. Thirteen civil society organizations, including 27 new Peacce Educators, benefited from this initiative with a view to strengthening the capacities of local players in the promotion of peace-building through and by means of Sport.

As part of Peace and Sport’s bottom-up approach, these two-day training sessions were an opportunity for our trainers to introduce future Educators for Peace to the catalytic role of sport in achieving peace, inclusion and social cohesion.

Led by Ludovic Dau, Director of Field Programs, Benjamin Boukpeti, Olympic medallist and representative of the Champions for Peace Club, and Jean Simedo, local coordinator and Peace and Sport trainer, these two training sessions were punctuated by structured activities combining theoretical training and practical activities.

For the future Peace Educators, these days also represented the perfect opportunity to question the trainers at their disposal. They were able to share their personal, day-to-day experiences of social and sports coaching, while at the same time making the link with the new knowledge they had acquired, thus placing the promotion of values of peace and inclusion at the heart of sports practice.

At the end of these two training sessions, the Peace Educators were awarded certificates of participation in the presence of all the stakeholders in the scheme, namely the Service de Coopération de l’Action Culturelle of the French Embassy in Togo and Peace and Sport.

92% of the Togolese CSOs trained responded to a feedback questionnaire, in which 100% of the Peace Educators who replied said they felt familiar with the notion of Peace through Sport.
