Tottenham Hotspur endured a tough trip to Hungary to take on Ferencvaros in the Europa League tonight, and here’s how we rated each player from the game.
An incredibly difficult first half saw Spurs playing second fiddle to the Hungarian champions, who even had a goal disallowed for offside rather harshly. But, Ange Postecoglou‘s side were ahead not long after thanks to a goal from Pape Matar Sarr.
In the second half, Tottenham hunted vigorously for a second goal to kill the game, but they left themselves wide open at the back, too, to make it a nervy affair throughout. But, Brennan Johnson popped up with yet another goal to seal the win.
We cast our expert eye over the full 90 minutes in the Europa League, and here are our player ratings for the Spurs stars, on a scale of 1-10.
Guglielmo Vicario: A big save in the first half, good command of his area in the second. Did everything he needed to really, as he wasn’t tested despite the pressure from the home team. 7.
Pedro Porro: Really strong performance as an attacking full-back, providing great link-up play in dangerous areas. Was exploited a little bit in the first 45, but had a much better control on the game defensively in the second. 7.
Cristian Romero: An unusually messy first 45 minutes from the captain, but he settled into the game as it went on. If anything, a rather quiet night for Romero. 6.
Archie Gray: A slightly uncomfortable display at centre-half, but looked far more assured when he switched out to the left-back position. Was guilty of leaving too much space behind him, though and giving Ferencvaros chances. 5.
Ben Davies: Played well, if not a little unremarkable. Made a few blocks, read the game acutely, and held up the opponents effectively around the edge of the box. 6.
Yves Bissouma: Did not do enough to protect the Spurs defence, often losing the ball or giving it away cheaply with a poor pass. A disappointing night for the midfielder. 4.
Pape Matar Sarr: Took his goal nicely, and put in a great shift in the middle of the park, often covering the six and eight roles to help Bissouma out. A very dynamic, industrious performance. 7.
Lucas Bergvall: A nervous performance from the youngster, who looked far too eager to make up for last week’s disappointment. Complicated things instead of going for the simple decision and lost the ball too many times. 4.
Mikey Moore: Really mature and tantalising display from the teenager, who constantly looked to take on his man and drive into dangerous areas. Was integral to creating the chance for the second goal. 8.
Timo Werner: It really is not happening for Werner at the moment. Poor touches, invisible at times, and when he did get a golden opportunity, he tried to take it around the keeper and fluffed his chance. 4.
Will Lankshear: Put himself about, pressed with intensity, and linked up well with his teammates. Could and should have got a goal but knocked it just wide. 6.
James Maddison: Was probably hoping to impact the game more as a substitute, but struggled to really get a hold of things in the middle. 6.
Dejan Kulusevski: Made a really smart run to distract the defenders and open up just enough room for Johnson’s goal. Had a very positive impact on the game for Spurs. 7.
Brennan Johnson: Scored one to keep his hot run going, and could have had another, too, after a stunning long-range effort grazed the bar. 7.
Dominic Solanke: Didn’t really have time or opportunity to do much to change the game for Spurs. N/A
