Acclaimed actor Andrew Garfield has had quite a journey in the spotlight over the past two decades. And while his professional life is thriving, there's one part of his personal life that's still filled with questions at age 41.
Garfield opened up about his life and career today in a new interview with Esquire. When reflecting on turning 40 last year and playing a father in his new movie We Live in Time, he started thinking about becoming a father himself someday. He has no illusions about what that big life step would entail, and realizes that his busy schedule might not make him the most present father, even when he's at home.
"I’m already a tired guy. I don’t want to be a tired dad," The Amazing Spider-Man star said honestly. He added that his industry isn't exactly the healthiest environment to raise a child, noting that "particularly bringing new life into the context of my life, there’s a heavy burden there."
Garfield has had ups and downs with his own father, so besides the exposure to bad parent-child relationships in his work, he also speaks from the heart. It's something he's been open about for quite some time.
"I don’t know of any father-and-son relationship that hasn't struggled. Fathers do really have an ability to mess up their sons," he told Time Out back in 2014 when discussing the personal life of Spider-Man.
"You know, when I become a dad, as soon as my child is born I’ll have messed up," he acknowledged. "There is an imperfection in being human that we have to accept. As the child you’ve got to learn to get over it, become your own person. You can’t keep blaming your mom and dad. It’s a tough road for young people. It definitely was for me."
We Live in Time is in theaters now.
