JJ Redick is ‘thrilled’ to be coaching D’Angelo Russell, wants him to have career year
There hasn’t been much chatter about D’Angelo Russell this summer, but head coach JJ Redick made it clear he is a big part of the plans for this upcoming year.
D’Angelo Russell is a player who is a constant point of contention for fans.
He has been in trade rumors throughout his career, especially during his two stints as a Laker. Whether you praise or criticize his performance, the counterargument will arrive once you finish making your point.
With JJ Redick taking over as the franchise's coach, it’s been noticed that while he’s mentioned players like LeBron James and Anthony Davis and youngsters like Max Christie and Jalen Hood-Schifino, Russell has not been brought up as much.
During his media availability on Wednesday, he was asked about the Lakers' starting guard and made it clear he has high hopes for him coming into the new basketball season.
“Throughout the summer, he was probably the guy I talked to the most of anyone on the roster. We had a number of conversations during free agency and throughout July and August. He’s going to have a major role on this team. I think the thing D’Lo and I have talked about a lot is ‘Let’s put you in a position to have a career year.’ His mindset, his energy, the talk that he’s brought, the leadership that he’s brought when he’s been in the building has been excellent. I’m thrilled, thrilled ot be coaching D’Lo this season. He’s in a great place right now heading into training camp.”
Last season wasn’t a career year for Russell, but it was his best as a Laker. He averaged 18 points, 6.3 assists, 3.1 rebounds and set the single-season 3-point record.
To have his best numbers ever, Russell would have to produce a stat line of 24 points, 7.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game. Those numbers aren’t far-fetched but would likely only come to fruition if Russell is the best version of himself and buys into Redick’s style of play.
The Lakers head coach has already named Russell a starter, so he already has that stamp of approval. With Redick making such a strong statement about him, things are starting off on the right foot as we enter training camp.
In the end, if Redick and Russell find common ground, it can lead to the best-case scenario and a career year is possible. We just have to see how it looks on the floor to start the season.
Vice president of basketball operations, Rob Pelinka, has already stated that in about 30 games, he’ll know how far the Lakers are from title contention and will evaluate what moves, if any, need to be made.
Just like last season, if Russell balls out, he’ll likely remain in Los Angeles, but if more is needed, this could be his last year in purple and gold.
For now, it’s time for training camp. Russell is the starting guard and every team begins at 0-0. Ball up top.
