Comelec allows EMBO residents in Taguig to vote for congressman in 2025
MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is allowing residents of the 10 Enlisted Men’s Barrios (EMBO) in Taguig City, which were formerly part of Makati, to vote for a congressman in the 2025 elections.
Voter disenfranchisement had been in an issue for residents of the EMBO barangays, as the Supreme Court did not classify which legislative district the 10 villages belong to in Taguig after jurisdiction had been transferred from Makati.
The Comelec, in a resolution dated Friday, September 27, confirmed which district the barangays belong to, in response to a Senate concurrent resolution by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, which was approved by his fellow colleagues, despite a heated exchange with Senator Migz Zubiri.
The House also subsequently passed its own resolution on the subject.
The barangays included in the first legislative district are:
- Comembo
- Pembo
- Rizal
The barangays included in the second legislative district are:
- Cembo
- South Cembo
- East Rembo
- West Rembo
- Pitogo
- Post Proper Northside
- Post Proper Southside
The Comelec resolution also increased the number of councilors in each legislative district of Taguig from eight to 12. The Senate resolution said this is “for the purposes of fair and equitable representation.”
Residents in EMBO barangays will also be able to cast their votes for all national and other local positions. – Rappler.com
