Mitt Romney concerned about Trump 'retribution': 'How am I going to protect 25 grandkids?'

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) is worried about Donald Trump's campaign promise to be "retribution" for his supporters.

The retiring Utah senator and former GOP presidential nominee has drawn MAGA ire as the only Republican to vote to convict in both impeachment trials involving the former president, and he worries that his family and himself could be targeted by the Justice Department and the FBI if Trump is re-elected to a second term, reported The Atlantic.

“The good news is I haven’t had an affair with anybody; I don’t have any classified documents; I can’t imagine something I’ve done that would justify an investigation, let alone an indictment," Romney said.

However, Romney worries the former president could call for investigations of his sons to get back at him.

“I mean, hopefully they’ve all crossed their t’s and dotted their i’s,” Romney said. “But it’s hard for me to imagine that President Trump would take the time to go out and see if [he] can find something on members of my family.”

When pressed to imagine what else Trump could do as retribution, Romney expressed concern for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“Yeah, but I’ve got 25 grandkids!” he said. “How am I going to protect 25 grandkids, two great-grandkids? I’ve got five sons, five daughters-in-law — it’s like, we’re a big group.”

Romney spent thousands of dollars in the weeks after Jan. 6, 2021, to protect his family from MAGA extremists, but he expressed real concern for what Trump might do with another term as chief executive in command of the federal government.

“I think he has shown by his prior actions that you can take him at his word,” Romney said. “So I would take him at his word.”
