Ange Postecoglou admits that Tottenham Hotspur still have a gap to bridge with the best teams in the Premier League but insists that it can be done very quickly.
Coming into the new season, Postecoglou was not shy of putting more pressure on himself and his team by spelling out their big ambitions.
The Australian even pointed out that throughout his career, his sides have tended to win silverware in his second season in charge and made it clear that he hopes to catch the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City (Sky Sports).
Four games into the campaign, we have seen no evidence that Spurs are capable of challenging the best teams in the league, and Postecoglou’s comments are predictably being scrutinised and even ridiculed (Sky Sports).
The Tottenham boss has now acknowledged that there is a gap between his side and the best teams in the country, but he remained adamant that it can be bridged very quickly.
He said (via George Sessions): “I think that gap that exists between us and the top teams, we can bridge and we can bridge very quickly if we stay disciplined and focused on what we’re trying to do.
“You have to acknowledge it. That’s the starting point. If you think there isn’t a massive gap, then it kind of defeats the purpose. That shouldn’t be daunting. It shouldn’t make you think it’s insurmountable. I certainly don’t think it is.”

Unfortunately, it is starting to seem like the ‘gap’ Postecoglou is talking about is actually systemic and tactical, rather than just to do with personnel.
For example, in terms of personnel, our back four is up there with the best in Europe and under a slightly more compact system, there is no way we would be conceding the goals that we are.
However, that is the bargain that Postecoglou has made with his hyper-attacking approach and he deserves time to show that he can turn things around. It is important not to overreact after just four games.
