PARKING POLICY: LASPA MEETS WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF RCBC

Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, General Manager of the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA), recently met with representatives of the Restaurant, Café, Bar, and Club (RCBC) Association to address concerns regarding the State Parking Policy’s impact on the hospitality sector.

During the meeting held recently at LASPA’s office on Sasegbon Street, Ikeja GRA, Mrs. Adelabu reassured attendees of the government’s commitment to the policy, which aims to tackle indiscriminate parking and ease traffic congestion.

Mrs. Adelabu acknowledged the significant role of the hospitality sector in the state’s traffic and parking management, emphasising the need for collaboration and support.

She addressed concerns about overlapping jurisdictions and local government interference. She also clarified that the state government has established a strategic partnership with local governments and local council development areas to ensure no disturbances over parking levies.

Regarding inadequate parking infrastructure, Mrs. Adelabu noted that some hospitality businesses have failed to comply with building regulations by not including sufficient parking for customers. LASPA offers a six-month grace period for companies to address parking shortfalls and provides guidance on solutions. The Authority also advises businesses to consult with LASPA before allowing customers to park on roads, which can obstruct traffic.

Acknowledging the challenges businesses face, Mrs. Adelabu urged the hospitality sector to communicate their specific needs so that LASPA can provide appropriate guidance and recommend nearby parking options.

“It is essential to balance business interests with the rights of the general public. The Authority has provided ample time and opportunities for businesses to adapt. Being mindful of prevailing circumstances, it has also made provisions for suitable payment plans for those who comply”, she added.

The General Manager, therefore, urged all Lagosians to support the state government’s parking regulation efforts, saying “We encourage everyone to back the Lagos State Parking Policy and participate in the regulated on-street parking scheme. Compliance with the policy is vital for reducing traffic congestion and improving parking efficiency. By paying the required parking levies and engaging with the system, you help create a more organised and accessible urban environment”.

In response, RCBC President, Mrs. Morenike George-Taylor expressed gratitude for the General Manager’s proactive engagement and confirmed that many members are already compliant. She also noted that the hospitality sector is ready to support and adapt to the new parking scheme.

Also present at the meeting was Tokunbo Sotinwa, Director of Government Relations and Advocacy.

The Agency enjoined members of the public to visit LASPA’s website or call its contact Lines: 02-01-2275230 or 02-01-2275231 for more information on the regulated on-street parking scheme or parking-related inquiries.
