SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Schenectady Police and Fire Departments responded to Schenectady High School on Tuesday after a student allegedly pulled a knife on another student during a fight. According to police and school officials, both students involved in the fight were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening cuts to their hands.
Schenectady Police Department Lieutenant Ryan Macherone said law enforcement responded to the school at 12:48 p.m. Police said a preliminary investigation found the two students were fighting when one pulled out a knife, cut the victim's hand, and suffered a cut to their own hand as well. The school was placed on a temporary hold, which has now been lifted.
Outside of Schenectady High School concerned parents and their students said they would like to see metal detectors installed to ensure safety. Frustrated students and parents all expressed concerns about the district’s lack of communication.
“Why hasn’t the school done anything about it other than tell people about it in emails where people barely check,” said Naomi.
She is a freshman at the school and said before school started she was concerned about fitting in. But now, with incidents almost every day since school started, she said she has new concerns.
“The phones aren’t the main problem. Sure they may take attention away, like some of the time, but the real problem is guns and other violent things that can potentially harm people,” said Naomi.
Her and other students said metal detectors would give them a piece of mind. Parents lined up at the school to sign their kids out early.
“I want to see the school do better and not let these kinds of things slide,” said Naomi.
She and other students said they do not feel safe at school and will stay home on Wednesday. NEWS10 reached out to the district and we’ll continue to follow this story to bring you the latest.
