PRATT, Kan. (KSNW) — A fire at a duplex in Pratt killed a person and a dog on Monday morning.
A news release from the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office said its Investigation Division was called to look into a fire at 601 N. Oak St. in Pratt.
They were requested by the Pratt Fire Department after firefighters responded to the structure fire at 8:18 a.m.
A news release from the Pratt Fire Department said crews entered by the front door and started an attack line. The fire was quickly extinguished, and firefighters searched the home to find Marjorie Meis, 67, and a dog.
Meis was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where she died.
KSFM said the fire originated in and was contained in the kitchen. The house suffered smoke damage throughout. The other half of the duplex suffered light smoke damage, and those occupants were able to escape safely without injury.
The incident is still under investigation, pending autopsy results.
