Democrats are preparing for a nightmare election scenario in which Kamala Harris is elected president — and House Speaker Mike Johnson throws the process into turmoil.
Senior Democrats told Politico Johnson has given multiple signs that he could stand in the way of a transfer of power — and escalate what the election fraud claims factions of the GOP made on Jan. 6, 2021.
“It’s another scenario that is nagging top House Democrats ,” Politico reported Tuesday. “That Speaker Mike Johnson might keep his majority as Harris wins and find himself in a position where he could obstruct the counting of electoral votes and possibly throw the election to the House under the constitutional provisions of the 12th Amendment.”
Johnson has a history of supporting Donald Trump’s election fraud claims. He signed an amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to overturn some results after 2020, and he’s currently claiming undocumented immigrants are illegally voting.
Politico warned that could be him laying the grounwork for a 2024 challenge to the result.
“It would be silly to ignore the history here,” Rep. Joe Morelle (D-NY) told the outlet.

Politico said Democrats are increasingly worried because Johnson’s own position is fragile — meaning, if the Republicans retain control of the House, he may feel pressure to keep extremists in his party happy.
“The muses say something like, ‘We know how to tell the truth when we want to tell the truth. And when we want to tell lies, we know how to tell lies that seem like the truth.’” said Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD).
“And that’s how I view Johnson’s jurisprudence.”
“I have faith in people,” Morelle told Politico. “But we’re prepared for any eventuality and … we’ll be in a position to press forward and make sure there’s a peaceful transfer.”
