The India vs Bangladesh 2024 two-match Test series is all set to get underway at Chepauk or the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai from Thursday. But all eyes of the cricket fans will be on the weather for the course of the five days in Chennai as Rohit Sharma’s side will look to start off the season with a win under their belt.
India have already witnessed the first-ever washed out Test match in Asia in 91 years with the Afghanistan vs New Zealand one-off Test getting washed out without a ball being bowled in Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh last week. Fans will be praying that they don’t witness a repeat of the rainy scenes at Chepauk – the home of MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings.
According to the weather prediction, there are more than 40 per cent chances of rain on the first two days of the Test match on Thursday and Friday. Weather prediction website Accuweather predicts thunderstorms in Chennai on September 19 and 20 with a maximum temperature of around 34 degrees on these days.
A couple of thunderstorms along with cloudy weather is also predicted for Day 3 of the Test match on Saturday but the chances of rain reduces of half to around 25 per cent. In the final two days on Sunday and Monday, although it will remain cloudy there is very little chance of rain with the temperature hovering between 34 and 36 degrees.
Meanwhile, India and Bangladesh trained under clear skies in Chennai ahead of the 1st Test on Monday (September 16). For India, it was their third training session in the city but for Najmul Hossain Shanto’s Bangladesh side it was the first one.
Virat Kohli was among the first set of batters to hit the nets. In the adjacent net was southpaw Yashasvi Jaiswal as both he and Kohli faced Jasprit Bumrah and home hero Ravichandran Ashwin. The next set of batters included skipper Rohit, Shubman Gill and Sarfaraz Khan, the last named player arriving here after taking part in the second round Duleep Trophy match in Anantapur. The captain focussed on playing spinners, keeping Bangladesh’s slow bowling attack in mind.
Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant and pacer Mohammed Siraj too faced local bowlers and a significant amount of throwdowns.
Team India fielding coach T. Dilip was impressed with the intensity of the unit despite punishing Chennai weather which is humid all the year round. “Today, whole session idea was to get everyone together for a team drill with two segments to it. First is competition taking humidity into account, we made sure that volume is less but intensity is more,” Dilip told BCCI official website after the session.
He then explained the training module. “We split teams into two groups and made some competition in catching and the team that made less number of errors won. It was Virat’s team that won today,” he informed.
Team India will have their fourth training session in Chennai on Tuesday (September 17). Before training skipper Rohit Sharma will be briefing the media at 1pm IST onwards.
