John Textor, the Crystal Palace shareholder and latest bidder for Everton, believes that the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is not fit for football as it is ‘too nice’.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is the envy of many in the Premier League.
Unlike many of the new stadiums that have cropped out around Europe, which have become soulless bowls, Tottenham’s 62,850-capacity venue has managed to retain the atmosphere at White Hart Lane, owing to the closeness of the stands to the pitch and the acoustic design.
Additionally, the venue has also been designed with a retractable pitch to host other sports and events, thus making it a money-minting machine for ownership.
Everton are set to become the latest club to move to a new stadium, with the Toffees set to shift from Goodison Park to Bramley-Moore Dock in Vauxhall at the end of this campaign.
However, Textor, who has bid to buy a stake in Everton, has now insisted that he does not want the Merseyside club’s new stadium to be like Spurs’ one.
The American investor told Sky Sports: “I don’t like Tottenham. I go into that stadium, and I think it’s too nice.
“I remember the first couple of games I went there and the people I was with were in this banquet hall, and I thought ‘this isn’t football’ and I really believe that. It’s way too nice a stadium for football.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While one can understand where Textor is coming from, his criticism is aimed at modern stadiums in general rather than Spurs’ specifically.
Some would also suggest that Textor might have felt differently had he been sat in the South Stand rather than in the corporate section of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
