Police increase presence at two Geary County schools over 'social media trend'

GEARY COUNTY (KSNT) - Law enforcement in Geary County is increasing its presence at two local schools this week in an effort to increase the safety of students.

The Geary County Sheriff's Office posted to social media Friday, Sept. 13 stating it is "working hand in hand" with school officials at USD 475 to protect students. The sheriff's office reposted a message issued to families in the district about a social media trend which lists Junction City Middle school and Fort Riley Middle School by name.

School officials say the trend lists these schools, alongside other educational institutions around the country, as potential schools being targeted for shootings. USD 475 said it is working with the sheriff's office, Junction City Police Department and Fort Riley about this worrying trend.

"Regardless of the nature of these threats, the Junction City Police Department, Geary County Sheriff's Office, and USD 475 are fully committed to the safety and well-being of all students within our community. As a precautionary measure, there will be an increased officer presence at our district's schools over the coming days.

Safety is our top priority in Geary County Schools USD 475, and we are committed to maintaining a safe school environment for all students and staff."
