A VET with years of experiencing seeing to all types of animals has revealed the worst dog breeds to own.
Alex, from the UK, took to social media to warn of the risk of certain dogs – and said he would never own them himself.
Alex, a vet, revealed five breeds he would never own[/caption] Shar pei dogs were on his banned list[/caption]In the clip, he said: “Here’s five dog breeds that I wouldn’t own as a vet.
“Now please remember these are all ultimately my own opinion, it’s based on seeing a lot of dogs with health issues in my day job, and I generally see these breeds more often than others.”
The first on his list was the Chinese dog breed – the Shar Pei.
Known for it’s adorable wrinkly skin, the vet said it also causes them lots of healthy problems.
He said: “They can lead to serious skin infections as bacteria get stuck between between the folds and festers.
“They’re also prone to ear infections due to their narrow ear canals.”
Not only this, but they often need a procedure done which is similar to a face lift to prevent their eyelids rolling forward.
Flat-faced dogs like Frenchies were also on the banned list for Alex as they were notorious for health problems leading owners to spend thousands at the vets.
Their flat faces often lead to breathing difficulties, overheating and reflux and that’s not all they even suffer form skin infections and eye problems.
“If a dog needs multiple procedures just to live a normal life then they probably shouldn’t exist,” explained the vet.
German Shepherd’s also made it on the list as they need lots of stimulation which a lot of owner’s can’t give them – leading the dogs to be anxious and reactive.
The vet said Great Dane’s were also a breed he didn’t want to own as they’re prone to a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy.
He added: “They often have a shorter lifespan due to their large size, averaging about 7 to 8 years old.
“I would just find it incredibly tough to say goodbye after such a short time.”
Dog experts, Tug-E-Nuff, surveyed the UK to find out their favourite dog breeds, here's the top ten.
Last but not least, Alex revealed he would never own was the Dachshund.
“While they do often have lovely personalities, their body shape really just predisposes them to many of these health problems and I just find it heartbreaking to see them go through all of this,” he said.
The clip has gone viral on his TikTok account @alex_thevet with over 119k views and 4,000 likes.
People were quick to share their thoughts in the comments.
One person wrote: “I wish people would get more educated on these breeds!!”
Another commented: “Too many people buy dogs on looks, and don’t research their needs, combined with lack of exercise mental and physical. People need to research their breeds BEFORE getting them!”
“I fully agree, the amount of Frenchies I see at work with severe health conditions is so sad,” penned a third.
Meanwhile a fourth said: “Couldn’t agree more.”
“Sad but true,” claimed a fifth.
Someone else added: “The Sharpei, every vets least favourite dog.”
