The Mariners try to earn a split with the powerful Padres

The Mariners and Padres will play one more game before Seattle returns to divisional play, welcoming in the Rangers for a four-game AL West matchup where they’ll see Kumar Rocker make his debut, along with Texas’s high-priced pitching acquisitions in Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer. It’s a rough road ahead, and that includes tonight, when the Mariners will have to face part of the return in the Juan Soto trade, tough righty Michael King.

King struck out nine over six innings the last time he faced the Mariners in a game where the Mariners managed to scrape two runs off him and win thanks to one of Bryce Miller’s best performances of the season. Tonight it will be Bryan Woo’s turn to try to hold the line while the offense will try to improve on their two-run, thirteen-strikeout effort.

Lineups:

See, now this. This is a good graphic.

News:

If you missed yesterday’s update, the Mariners made a few roster moves, transferring Yimi García (right elbow inflammation) to the 60-day IL. They also placed Luis Castillo, who has a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, on the 15-day IL. C Seby Zavala was recalled in a corresponding move. The Mariners will still need to make another move to get Castillo’s replacement in for this Sunday, likely Emerson Hancock.

The Padres also made some moves, bringing in a couple of relief arms while putting former Ranger Martin Pérez on the paternity list.. Say, remember when Luis Campusano was supposedly a better catching prospect than Cal Raleigh? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Tonight’s game information:

Game time: 6:40 PT

TV: ROOT Sports NW, with Dave Sims and Mike Blowers

Radio: Seattle Sports 710 AM with Rick Rizzs and Aaron Goldsmith

Umpiring crew: David Arrieta (HP), Mike Estabrook (1B), Tripp Gibson (2B), Laz Diaz (3B)

Today in Mariners history:

  • 1989: John Dopson pitches a complete game for the Red Sox, allowing just two runs, but the Mariners’ Brian Holman is even better, allowing just one run in the first inning and none after; Michael Jackson and Mike Schooler lock down the hold and save.
  • 1994: The Mariners score six of their seven runs in the final three innings after Randy Johnson spins seven shutout innings as the Mariners defeat the Brewers, 7-3.
  • 2012: The Mariners edge out the Blue Jays, 4-3, as they rap out 14 hits. Tom Wilhelmsen collects his 25th save.
  • 2022: Eugenio Suárez walks it off as the Mariners take a thrilling 8-7 win over Atlanta:
