Tottenham Hotspur coach Ange Postecoglou may come across as very amiable and personable in press conferences, but he is thought to keep distance between himself and his players. James Maddison has been speaking about his manager and his methods.
When Spurs hired Postecoglou just over a year ago, eyebrows were raised and questions were asked as to whether the Australian could cope with the step up to the demands of the Premier League.
Those doubts were cast aside pretty quickly last season, with Postecoglou managing to establish a fresh and exciting style of football within his team, and leading the Lilywhites to fifth place in the league.
The players appear happy, the squad is improving all the time, and now a new season lies ahead with success and trophies on the wishlist for fans of the club.
Speaking to Optus Sport about the manager and the way he works, Maddison explained how the team has bought into Postecoglou’s philosophy.
He said: “That’s just the way he is. He’s someone who is very thorough in the way he wants to play and his philosophy. He’s got his ways and to be fair, the lads have bought into it really well over the last year.
“I think that’s important, if you’re going to play for Ange Postecoglou you need to buy into his way and his philosophy of playing as a team.”
Maddison went on to describe the working relationship he has with the manager and how he feels about the dynamic between the coach and players at Spurs.
He added: “I don’t mind [the distance] to be fair. I think it can work like that. That’s just his way, but we still have a great relationship, in terms of professionally; he’s still brilliant in the meetings, and he gets the best out of us.
“I’ve said numerous times, his motivational stuff is amazing. He makes you really want to go and play for him, and play well.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I don’t think there’s any problem with having a professional distance between the coach and the players. You can still get on with the players while maintaining a level of respect and authority, and Postecoglou seems to have got it down to a tee.
