Warrington Crescent Flat is a minimalist apartment located in London, United Kingdom, designed by Sofia Xanthakou. The renovation, a delicate dance between preservation and innovation, saw the apartment’s layout entirely reimagined. This metamorphosis enhanced both flow and luminosity while paying homage to the building’s rich historical tapestry. Structural adaptations were inevitable, especially in light of previous renovations that had stripped away much of the original character. Yet, from this blank canvas emerged a design that seamlessly weaves together the few surviving elements—a cast-iron fireplace and wooden windows—with contemporary elegance.
At the heart of this transformation lies the union of kitchen and living room, a masterstroke that births an airy, light-filled space offering enchanting views of the communal garden. A classic wooden frame marks this transition, a subtle genuflection to the apartment’s Victorian heritage. The redesign also cleverly repurposed spaces, conjuring a guest room from the former bathroom and crafting a luxurious bathroom and walk-in closet where once stood a windowless bedroom. The devil, as they say, is in the details, and here, every element has been carefully considered to strike a harmonious balance between historical reverence and modern sophistication.
New plaster ceiling details and radiators converse effortlessly with the restored cast-iron fireplace, now graced with a wooden mantel and verdant Tinos marble base. Underfoot, wide planks of Scandinavian Douglas fir offer a minimalist counterpoint to the more ornate features, a dialogue between simplicity and embellishment. Bespoke woodwork, including a kitchen adorned with pristine Dionysos marble counters, complements the restored windows with understated elegance. Soft, rounded doorways guide the eye through the space, while inox-finished light switches and a sleek walk-in closet inject a contemporary flair without overshadowing the apartment’s historical essence.
