Ex-President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris shook hands for the second time within hours, at a 9/11 memorial service after their fiery debate.
Trump stood feet away from Harris at Ground Zero in New York City on Wednesday morning and extended his right hand to his opponent, who engaged in the gesture.
The former president added his left hand to the shake and flashed a wide, fake smile at Harris, as the two 2024 candidates completed the gesture right in front of President Joe Biden. Harris and Trump exchanged words that were not audible.
Trump did not acknowledge Biden in the clip, and it was not known if he did at all during the ceremony.
The Republican nominee mouthed, ‘Thank you,’ as someone in the audience chanted his name, and continued smiling, as did Harris.
They stood at the front row of the memorial service at the World Trade Center site – Harris, Biden, former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, Trump and his vice presidential running mate JD Vance in that order from left to right.
On Tuesday night, the first face-to-face showdown between the candidates started on a serious and tense note as Harris stepped over the middle of the debate stage and shook hands with Trump.
Many have opined that Harris won the debate as she baited Trump and kept him in the defensive for much of the hour and 45 minute meeting in Philadelphia.
Meanwhile, Trump accused ABC News moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis of pulling a ‘three to one’ on him for fact-checking him repeatedly. Trump concluded, ‘We won the debate, we had a terrible network’.
Trump and Harris put aside their political differences to show respect for the fallen on the 23rd anniversary of the worst terrorist attack on American soil.
The former president told Fox News that it was ‘just a horrible day’ in US history.
Harris stated before the ceremony: ‘Today is a day of solemn remembrance as we mourn the souls we lost in a heinous terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.
‘We stand in solidarity with their families and loved ones.’
