Luxury carmaker recalling more than 1.5 million cars over brake issue & suspends deliveries – including in the UK
A MAJOR luxury car brand has revealed it will have to recall 1.5 million vehicles over a braking problem.
The issue, which has been found in cars worldwide including in the UK, will mean they expect a drop in deliveries and a lowered profit forecast for 2024.
Over 1 million BMW motors have been fitted with a potentially faulty integrated braking system (IBS) – just days after we reported that deliveries of two of their popular models were being halted.
The affected vehicles, which were produced between June 2022 and August 2024, per BMW, cover several models, including select BMW X models (excluding the X3 and X4), the 5 and 7 Series and Rolls-Royce Spectre, as well as the Mini Cooper and Countryman.
According to Autocar, the problem determines the amount of feel provided through the brake pedal.
They said that, initially, the problem was thought to have affected more than 80,000 BMW models, which prompted the recall.
This was then widened as “additional cases outside the original scope of the recall have been identified” – affecting deliveries of the Mini Cooper and Countryman.
Now it appears 1.53 million cars are affected, with 1.2 million already owned by customers and around 320,000 remaining with BMW or in dealer stock.
Despite the issue, BMW says their cars remain safe to drive as they await repairs.
Autocar says that the company is working with the DVSA on a fix for UK cars and is holding back undelivered vehicles until the issue is resolved.
Due to this, BMW expects a slight drop in deliveries and now forecasts a profit margin of 6-7%, down from 8-10%.
In a release, BMW said: “The delivery stops for vehicles that are not already in customers’ hands will have a negative worldwide sales effect in the second half of the year.
“The IBS-related technical actions impact over 1.5 million vehicles and result in additional warranty costs in a high three-digit million amount in the third quarter.”
