TOPEKA (KSNT) - Communities across northeast Kansas are remembering the lives that were lost 23 years ago in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center Towers.
Fort Riley, along with the 1st Infantry Division, will host a 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony at 10 a.m. on Wednesday "To remember those who perished on September 11, 2001, including the first responders, as well as the military men and women who gave their lives in service to this country during the Global War on Terrorism; and to honor those who serve today in the military and as first responders in our communities," according to a news release from a Fort Riley spokesperson.
There will be a wreath laying, three-volley salute and the playing of "Taps" at the Global War on Terrorism Monument, the monument is a small replica of the World Trade Center Towers on a pentagon-shaped base.
Junction City is hosting a remembrance ceremony for the community. Starting at 5 p.m., food will be served to community members before a ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m. The event will be held at City Hall, 700 N. Jefferson St. Junction City, KS, 66641.
Schools in the USD 475 school district are hosting freedom walks as a way to commemorate 9/11. According to Matt Hoover, USD 475 Communications Coordinator, some schools in the district will have an assembly learning about the impact 9/11 had on America, sing patriotic songs then walk carrying American flags or items students have made for troops.
"It's really important for our kiddos with over 50 percent of our students being military students, they truly understand for the most part what 9/11 was all about," Hoover said. "It's huge for the district to continue to educate our students about 9/11 especially with us being so connected to Military with five of our schools being on Fort Riley."
Hoover told 27 News parents of students can participate in the walks, as well as soldiers and other personnel. A list of USD 475 school and the times of their freedom walks are listed below:

Topeka Public Schools Junior ROTC cadets across the capital city will be remembering the heroes of 9/11 with different events. Highland Park, Topeka High, and Topeka West will hold flag raising ceremonies and moments of silence to honor the fallen heroes of the terrorist attack.
