Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has received major plaudits from the Danish press after a commanding display in the middle of the park against Serbia on Sunday.
Denmark made it two wins in two in the Nations League over the international break, with Hojbjerg playing a critical role in helping his side overcome the Swiss and the Serbians.
The midfielder’s four-year spell at Spurs came to an end earlier this summer, with the 29-year-old signing on an initial loan deal with Olympique Marseille, with an obligation that will see the move become permanent next summer.
Hojbjerg has made a decent start to his time at the Ligue 1 club and he has now seemingly carried that form onto the international stage, with the press back in his home country waxing lyrical about the former Tottenham man, who was hailed for delivering a real captain’s performance.
Danish outlet Sportsdunia wrote about Hojbjerg after the win against Serbia: “The only player on the night to complete passes in triple digits (100), making seven tackles as he ran the game for Denmark with his spatial intelligence, creativity and imperious ball control.”
BT pointed out that Hojbjerg’s lack of composure cost Denmark a goal but they too were quite complimentary about his overall showing across the two matches.
The outlet said: “We are a few hair follicles poorer after today, Pierre-Emile. One of the most beautiful attacks that Denmark has put together this year ended with an absurd mis-pass by the newly minted captain, who otherwise had all the time in the world.
“But we forget that when you go ahead and keep a cool head – and then humiliate the hot-tempered Swiss with a terrific 2-0 score! Well done.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While Hojbjerg was not the right fit for Postecoglou’s system, I am sure all Tottenham fans will be rooting for him to do well with Marseille and with Denmark over the next few years as the midfielder’s effort and attitude during his time at Spurs was second to none.
