Iran’s Minister of Interior Affairs, Eskandar Momeni, has reiterated his call for the deportation of undocumented Afghan refugees.
He stated that they should return to Afghanistan to help reconstruct the country.
Momeni emphasized that under the “Organization of Asylum Seekers” plan, refugees without residency permits will be deported from Iran. He expressed that the current situation is untenable for Tehran.
The minister further declared that Iran will no longer accept asylum seekers. He stressed that Afghan citizens in Iran are expected to return to their homeland and contribute to its rebuilding.
Following the takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban, hundreds of thousands of Afghans fled to neighbouring countries, including Iran and Pakistan.
Pakistan has intensified its deportation efforts since late last year, sending thousands of refugees back to Afghanistan. The UNHCR estimated that about three million Afghan refugees were living in Iran late last year.
In light of the forced deportations, the situation for Afghan refugees remains dire. Many face extreme poverty and humanitarian crises upon their return. The international community is urged to address these urgent needs and support those displaced by ongoing conflict and instability.
