BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- An Amherst man received a split sentence of six months in jail followed by five years of probation Monday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run earlier this year, the Erie County District Attorney's Office announced.
According to officials, 40-year-old Matthew Althoff was driving westbound on Losson Road in Cheektowaga around 7:21 p.m. on Jan.15 when he hit a pedestrian. He left the scene without reporting the incident to police.
The victim, 41-year-old Antwain Hankle, was clearing snow from his vehicle in front of his home when he was hit, the DA's office said. He was taken by ambulance to ECMC where he later died.
Althoff pleaded guilty to fatally striking a pedestrian and leaving the scene in May and originally faced a maximum of seven years in prison.
In addition to six months of jail followed by five years probation, Althoff's license was revoked. He also must participate in a DWI Treatment Court Program and install an ignition interlock device in his vehicle upon his release from custody.
