MECHANICVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- Mechanicville Police are urging residents to be cautious when opening messages from unknown numbers as a new scam emerges. Law enforcement said the latest scam involves using publically available information to create a sense of urgency to protect personal data.
Police said the scammers may send residents photos of their homes from Google Maps and alert them about spyware installed on their phones or computers, giving them access to the device's photos, videos, and web history. Scammers will then demand the individual to pay them through cryptocurrency like Bitcoin, not to release their information.
Law enforcement said scammers use publicly accessible information to boost their credibility. Additionally, Mechanicville Police said residents should never share their personal information with scammers or send money to them and immediately contact police by calling (518) 664-7383.
