Though they have won the series against Sri Lanka by 2-1 margin, the hopes of England cricket team to reach the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) has taken a big blow.
England was on for an almost-perfect series after they won the series against West Indies by 3-0 and first two Tests against Sri Lanka. However, Sri Lanka beat them by 8 wickets with no intention of reaching WTC finals.
As a result of the defeat, England has gone behind Sri Lanka and has fallen to the 6th place in the 2023-25 WTC table. England has 8 wins in 16 matches with a point percentage of 42.19%. Sri Lanka is barely ahead of England with 42.86% points.
Can England qualify for the WTC?
England started their campaign with a bad start, which will cost them their 2023-25 cycle. Even if England wins all six of their remaining Tests, they will still only reach up to 57.95%. This is still below what both India(68.52%) and Australia(62.50%) have at the moment.
Even if India wins all five Tests at home and lose all five games in Australia, England will still be finished. India will have to lose at least 6 of the remaining 10 Tests to finish below England.
