Alasdair Gold believes that Ange Postecoglou will rotate his squad significantly in the Europa League as he aims to keep key players fresh for the second half of the season.
Tottenham’s schedule will soon intensify, with the Europa League and the Carabao Cup about to kick off later this month.
With the Europa League entering a new format this season, teams will play eight group stage games than the usual six, which will put further strain on Postecoglou’s resources.
Gold points out that the Tottenham boss has already spoken about the importance of keeping key players fit through the season, and suggested that the Australian will thus make wholesale changes for the European clashes.
When asked whether Spurs will play their strongest team in the Europa League, the journalist said on a Q&A on Football.London: “I think naturally there will need to be a hefty dose of rotation although much will depend on the opposition. With games every three days for much of the coming months, Postecoglou can’t afford to just put out his strongest team in every match.
“Otherwise they will tire quickly or even worse, get injured. He has already spoken about keeping his main men fresher this season with more rotation.”
Gold suggested that we will see plenty of changes in the back four while Fraser Forster might also get a chance to play after a long time out of action.
In the forward line, he named Timo Werner and Richarlison as players who could get the chance to prove their worth, while adding that summer signings, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall could also get a go in the competition.
Gold continued: “I would think Fraser Forster will play in goal for most of the games, otherwise the decision to include him instead of Spence looks a bit daft. Radu Dragusin will play plenty but Davies may be needed at left-back at times.
“It’s a good competition to give Bergvall and Gray – perhaps at right-back – plenty of minutes in as well as others like Timo Werner and the many central midfielders who will be vying for spots in all the games.
“Richarlison, when he returns, will likely be able to get his sharpness and goalscoring on point in the competition and we’ll get to see youngsters like Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear hopefully.”

The point of signing players like Dragusin, Gray and Werner is to play them in these sorts of games. No matter who plays, Tottenham should have more than enough quality to comfortably overcome the likes of Qarabag, Ferencvaros and Rangers.
