ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The University Police Department (UPD) has released the body camera footage of the officer that was struck by a car and fired his weapon. The incident happened around 1 a.m. on August 27.
The UPD officer tried to stop the car on Center Drive East on UAlbany’s Uptown Campus. Police said the people in that car had been banned from campus earlier that day for threatening and harassing behavior.
In the body cam video, you can see the officer running towards the car, the vehicle hit the officer, and the officer firing two rounds from his gun. You can watch the full body camera footage that UPD released in the video player above.
UPD said both rounds fired by the officer struck the driver’s side front door of the car. No one involved in the incident was struck by gunfire, said UPD. The vehicle was stopped shortly after. The officer and one of the occupants in the car had minor injuries.
Two occupants of the vehicle were charged with misdemeanors, while a third was not charged. The driver, Anthony Taylor, 19, of Albany, was charged with:
"UPD has never had to use a firearm in the line of duty before and we recognize the significance of this event and the impact it has had on our community," said UPD Chief Paul Burlingame. "Over the past week we have met with and discussed the incident with our campus community, neighbors and local organizations. These conversations have been incredibly supportive and insightful, and we have appreciated the opportunity to share the department’s response to the incident."
