Morning Briefing: Braves, Padres, D-backs All Lose
Good morning, Mets fans!
After Wednesday’s series finale, the Mets announced several roster moves. Outfielder DJ Stewart was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse as J.D. Martinez returned from the Paternity List. The team also picked up outfielder José Azócar off waivers from the San Diego Padres and assigned him to Triple-A Syracuse while right-handed pitcher Sean Reid-Foley was moved to the 60-day Injured List. Wild Card Update
Although the Mets did not play on Thursday, they were still able to gain ground on all three teams that were ahead of them in the Wild Card race. The Atlanta Braves were defeated by the Colorado Rockies 3-1 to put them in a virtual tie for the third Wild Card spot with New York. Elsewhere, the Padres fell to the Detroit Tigers thanks to Parker Meadows’ late-inning heroics while the Arizona Diamondbacks lost on a walk-off versus the San Francisco Giants. The Mets now sit three games back of the Padres for the top spot and 2 1/2 behind the D-backs for the second spot.

The Mets will look to continue their winning ways as they finish their homestand and begin a three-game weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds. Sean Manaea (11-5, 3.35 ERA) will take the mound for the Mets, while the Reds send out Fernando Cruz (3-9, 4.99 ERA). First pitch is at 7:10 pm and will be broadcast on SNY and Mets Radio 880 AM.
The city of Valley Stream, New York honored hometown product and Mets broadcaster Keith Raad with a ceremony and a presentation that featured a key to the city and an appearance from Mr. Met.

Following his retirement in April, former Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling is set to return to the booth for the team’s stretch run and postseason. He will be in the booth during the Sept. 24-26 series against the Baltimore Orioles as a warm-up for the playoffs.
