AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A woman was arrested in connection with a 19-year-old woman's death that happened back in February, after the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office said she died from a fentanyl overdose, the agency said on social media Thursday.
BCSO responded to the initial report of the death in northeast Bastrop after the woman was found unresponsive in her bed. She was later pronounced dead, according to BCSO. Investigators found "a small white powdery substance that was later confirmed to be fentanyl."
The BCSO Narcotics Unit started its investigation on how the woman "came into possession of the fentanyl." According to investigators, she was in the Austin area when she purchased the fentanyl the night before she died, according to BCSO.
The suspect was identified as Alba Karina Canales, 29, according to BCSO. The agency said she "was found to have a history of drug usage and trafficking."
KXAN reached out to the attorney listed for Canales. We will update this if a statement is received.
"Under a relatively new state law a person can be prosecuted for Murder if a person furnishes fentanyl to someone who later dies from a fentanyl overdose," the agency said.
Canales was arrested in Williamson County and was "in possession of fentanyl and other illegal narcotics," according to BCSO. She remained in the Bastrop County Jail in lieu of bonds at $100,000, the agency said.
The case remained under investigation Thursday.
