Donald Trump and JD Vance are missing from the Oregon voters' pamphlet. Here's why

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – As the state rolls out the Oregon voters' pamphlet ahead of the 2024 November general election, two names on the Republican ticket will be missing: former President Donald Trump and his running mate Ohio Sen. JD Vance.

According to the Oregon Secretary of State's office, the Trump/Vance campaign did not submit an optional statement or pay the required $3,500 for candidates to appear in the state's pamphlet.

Laura Kerns, the communications director for the Oregon Secretary of State's office, told KOIN 6 News they reached out to the Trump campaign multiple times reminding the campaign about the deadline to submit the statement and fee, but never heard back.

Similarly, ahead of the May primary election, the Trump campaign also declined to submit the statement. At the time, Trump’s campaign did not provide a reason for not submitting a statement to the secretary of state’s office, officials said.

While a statement from the Trump campaign will not be included in the voters' pamphlet, Trump will still appear on the Oregon ballot.

The Secretary of State's office noted that the pamphlet is not comprehensive of what voters will see on the November ballot. Not all candidates choose to submit an optional statement.

“The Voters’ Pamphlet is a public service to voters and a proud tradition in Oregon,” said Oregon Secretary of State LaVonne Griffin-Valade. "It’s an opportunity for candidates to present their case directly to Oregonians as they fill out their ballots. Not every candidate chooses to submit a statement, and that’s fine. It has no impact on the choices voters have in November.”

Candidates who will appear in the pamphlet include vice president, and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, and her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Additionally, Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver will appear in the pamphlet along with Pacific Green candidate Jill Stein, and We The People Candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr – who has since suspended his campaign in some states.

This is not the first time candidates have chosen to not submit a statement. Since 2012, it’s happened three times as presidential hopefuls John Kasich, Tulsi Gabbard, and Rand Paul declined to provide statements, the Secretary of State's office previously told KOIN 6 News.

Oregon voters’ pamphlets should arrive at households of registered Oregon voters no later than the week of Oct. 14, ahead of Election Day on Nov. 5, officials said.

KOIN 6 News reached out to the Trump campaign. This story will be updated if we receive a response.
