Manu Bhaker Reveals Unique Technique As Secret To Paris Olympics Success At Special KBC Episode

New Delhi: Shooting isn’t just a simple sport as it looks from outside. Instead, it’s much more complex as the shooters need to have a strong foundation as far as mindset is concerned. Double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker revealed an unique breathing technique that helped her winning laurels for India, including two bronze medals at the Paris Olympics 2024.

Bhaker became the first Indian female shooter to win an Olympic medal. She also became the first Indian athlete post-independence to win two medals in a single Olympics. The 22-year-old could have added a third to her tally, had she not finished fourth in women’s 25m air pistol event.

Explaining the technicalities of sharpshooting to a curious Amitabh Bachchan on a special episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 16, Bhaker stated controlling one’s mind is one of the major aspects in the sport. “At the start, having a strong foundation is crucial, and that applies to everything. Many people think shooting is simple – just pick up the pistol and aim, but it’s much more complex than that,” she said.

“During a match, our heart rate accelerates, and we must remain composed, even if we’re feeling anxious. Controlling that anxiousness or nervousness takes time and practice. To maintain focus, I rely heavily on yoga, Surya Namaskar, and meditation,” added Bhaker.

Having faced dejection due to a pistol malfunction at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, Bhaker was determined to make it count in Paris. She explained about her strict routine that includes a 4:8 ratio breathing process. “Additionally, I use a breathing technique with a 4:8 ratio: inhaling for 4 seconds and exhaling for 8 seconds. Mastering this through practice helps normalize my heart rate.

“During matches, when nerves make our hands shake while aiming, this breathing exercise helps me stay calm and focused,” she said. Bachchan also expressed his curiosity about the sport.“I used to wonder why shooters waited so long after taking a shot. I couldn’t grasp it until Abhishek explained that they’re controlling their breathing and heart rate; that’s why they take their time,” he said.

Joining Bhaker on the episode was another India bronze medalllist in Paris – wrestler Aman Sehrawat. The special episode will be aired on September 5 at 9 PM IST on Sony Entertainment Television.
