SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The St. George Greek Orthodox Church is hosting the 48th Annual Greek Festival from Sept. 6 to Sept. 8 at the Hellenic Center, 510 Liberty Street. The festival run Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and again on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
"For the members of our St. George community, this event is about family and community," Parish Council President Brian Goodale said. "When you come to our festival, we will welcome you as if you are stepping into our home filled with delicious food, great music and wonderful entertainment. Immerse yourself in our community and our religion and go ‘Greek for a day.’"
There will be a large array of authentic Greek food, beverages and pastries. Inside the Hellenic Center will include Moussaka (layers of eggplant, potato and sauteed ground beef topped with cream sauce) and Lamb Shanks Yiovetsi (tender oven-cooked lamb shanks smothered in sauce). Under the tents outside, Gyros (grilled beef) and Loukoumades (deep fried dough dipped in honey) will be served.
The festival will also include live Greek music and folk dances each day. The 2024 festival will also feature two raffles, one of which will have a top prize of $5,000. Other prizes include a 75" Roku TV, a Play Station 5, Proctor's Ticket packages and gift certificates.
Church tours will also be available throughout the weekend. St. George's Greek Church will also hold a memorial service in commemoration of 9/11 on Friday morning.
Admission to the festival is free but raffle tickets will be sold on the festival grounds at $100 each. For more information on the festival, visit St. George's website.
