PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – For the second year in a row, Arkansas started its season with a runner-up finish at the Carmel Cup, played at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Also for the second-straight year, Maria Jose Marin, who posted the low round of the day with a 67, was the individual runner-up while Kendall Todd recorded her second career top-five finish, tying for fourth.
Vanderbilt fired a 3-over-par 363 to move from third to first on the final day with a 54-hole score of 1,101 (+21) to edge the Razorbacks by two strokes. Arkansas was +7 on the final day, posting the second-best round of the day, to finish runner-up with a total of 1,103 (+23). Mississippi State, the 36-hole leader, fell to third with a final-round +15 and a three-day total of 1,107.
Jose Marin earned her fifth career top five – in just 11 career tournaments – with her third career runner-up finish, adding a T4th at last spring’s NCAA Championship and a win at last year’s Blessings Collegiate Invitational. Jose Marin climbed four spots on the final day thanks to her 5-under-par 67. She finished one stroke off the lead with a 6-under score of 210 (68-75-67).
Jose Marin was 2-under with birdies on holes 4 and 6 to start the final round. She dropped a shot on the par-4, 8th and made the turn at 1-under. She then reeled off birdies on holes 10, 12 and 13 before adding a final birdie on 16 to get to 5-under.
With two rounds in the 60’s at the Carmel Cup this week, Jose Marin has 10 for her short career, including four at Pebble Beach alone.
Todd shot a final-round 71 (-1) and finished at -3 overall (70-72-71=213) to tie for fourth and earn her second top-five, finishing runner-up and last year’s Bruzzy. She had four bogeys and five birdies in the final round to shoot par or better each day for the second time in her career. Also, She tied her career-best score of 213 (-3).
Freshman Anna Kate Nichols moved eight spots up the leaderboard on the final day, shooting a 1-under 71 on Sunday. The Little Rock native tied for 12th with a 6-over 222 (72-79-71). She got off to a slow start, standing at 2-over with four bogeys through eight holes. However, she rallied on the inward nine with four birdies versus just one bogey for her 71.
Fellow Razorback freshman Clarisa Temelo tied for 26th (76-73-81=230 / +14). Regan Zibilski tied for 33rd (75-778-81=234 / +17) and Giovanna Fernandez improved four spots to finish tied for 36th (82-77-77=236 / +19).
The Razorbacks will return to action at the end of the month by hosting the fifth annual Blessings Collegiate Invitational, presented by Tyson Foods. The event is Sept. 30-Oct. 2 and will be televised on GOLF Channel each afternoon.
