Police are searching for a stingy couple who allegedly made off with four adult meals and two drinks from a ‘cheap and cheerful’ eatery where meals come to less than £10 each.
The pair reportedly ‘dined and dashed’ from Al Taco in Whitby, North Yorkshire which serves burritos for £9.95 and fajitas for £13.75.
The restaurant boasts a 4.5 star rating on Trip Advisor and has been described by happy customers as ‘cheap and cheerful’.
North Yorkshire Police have released an image of a pair they would like to speak to in relation to the incident.
‘We’re appealing for information about a man and woman who left a Whitby restaurant without paying for their meal,’ a spokesperson said.
Al Taco thanked people for their support after a social media post the restaurant shared on Facebook was reposted a ‘whopping ten thousand times’.
‘Wow!! The original post which unfortunately showed two customers and their children leaving Al Taco after refusing to pay for their finished meals has been shared a whopping ten thousand times!’
‘And although we are deeply upset by what happened we have been blown away by your kind words and support,’ they continued.
‘We want to thank everyone for their love and support and we feel so proud to live in a small town that stand by each other.’
Earlier this year, a group of men were dragged back to a restaurant in Dumfriesshire after telling the owner the food was not ‘amazing enough’ for them to fork out the £300 cheque.
The owner of the establishment said that it had become more common for customers to avoid paying the bill. ‘People feel they can get way with ripping me off then other people try’, he said.
‘The six had simply decided everything they consumed that evening was free.’
Executive director of UK Hospitality Scotland, Leon Thompson, said: ‘Any customers walking out of restaurants without paying is simply unacceptable.
‘We would encourage any operators who experience walkouts to report it to the police.’
