A section of the Limassol-Nicosia highway is closed on Monday due to an accident that happened shortly before 1am.
According to the police the accident involved a rubbish truck driver who lost control of his vehicle and in circumstances under investigation, hit the railing, smashed into the divider and overturned. Garbage and parts of the truck were scattered over the road.
The 42-year-old driver was taken to hospital with a severe head injury and is intubated. No other vehicle was involved in the accident.
Both highway lanes are currently closed between the Parekklisia and Moni exits, and traffic is being diverted to the old Limassol to Nicosia road. Drivers heading for Nicosia should therefore use the Parekklisia exit.
Efforts are underway to remove the rubbish truck from the road with a crane.
