The reward for qualifying for the Champions League has never been higher, with The Times claiming that clubs competing in Europe’s premier club tournament will now see their earnings go up as the competition enters a new format.

Finishing in the top four has always been prioritised at Spurs due to the financial advantages that the tournament brings.

Being a self-sustaining club, Tottenham are reliant on the funds that the competition generates in order to be able to compete on transfer fees and wages with the biggest clubs across the continent.

The Times have now claimed that the earnings from the Champions League are set to increase substantially from the upcoming season.

How much could Spurs earn from the Champions League?

With the competition entering a new format, which will involve 36 teams rather than the usual 32 and an increase in the number of group stage matches, the broadcast and sponsorship income will go up.

This is expected to filter through to the earnings of the clubs competing in the tournament, which will go up by around 20 per cent.

The Times say that English clubs competing in the Champions League last season earned an average of around £80m and that figure is projected to go up by another £23m this season.

While many Spurs fans will rightly feel that an FA Cup or a Carabao Cup win will be preferable, the reality is that Tottenham need to finish in the top four in order to have the financial means to close the gap with the best sides in England and Europe.
